About this item
Sunday afternoon at church in Kailua, on the windward side, was very hot, especially in August. The louvers were all open, fans were moving the air (this was before the luxury of air conditioning!) and all of the ladies, dressed in their finest long holokuus, were very, very warm.
But everyone brought their beautiful fans to church, anticipating the warmth. Some were Japanese, some were Chinese, some were old English fans with cabbage roses or paintings of French scenes of ladies with piled white hair. As the service continued, a few heads nodded, and there were the sounds of Snap! Snap! as the women snapped their fans open and vigorously fanned their faces -- and those of their dozing husbands.
Whenever I see a fan, I think of those warm Sunday afternoons in church, listening to the admonitions to be true to oneself, do the right, and stay awake (which could only happen if you had a Sunday Fan!)
This is a large print on paper. It should be framed, with glass. I have a few left; the edition is mostly sold out. Hang it next to your Sunday Fan -- and enjoy!
