This is a one-of-a-kind original painting from which I made prints, posters, calendars and cards. It is 24" x 36", on canvas, stretched over bars.
I never knew about Protea until a friend of mine started to grow them on Maui in 1979. Now they are more commonplace, but I remember the fascination with the exotic look, and the fuzzy feel of some of the petals.
I decided to use a bouquet of Protea I received in one of my paintings, pairing it with my favorite view of Kaneohe Bay, when the tide is out. Those of you who live in around Kaneohe Bay know the place well - don't take Kahekili Highway, go around the old road - and you'll come to a place where a few old boats are tied to poles. When the tide is out, at sunset or sunrise, the wet sand and shallow water reflect the colors of Kaneohe Bay and the sky like a mirror.
I often wondered: Whose boats? Did they ever use them? They always seemed to be in the same place, as permanent at part of the landscape as the water itself.
This published original is a treasure, meant to be passed down from generation to generation. It should be framed to protect the integrity of the canvas (no glass, please). It is signed on the front, and I can personalize it on the back (it should not be personalized on the front). I ship this flat, in a reinforced box/crate, which is why the shipping is higher.
And if you are in Hawaii, make the trip around the old road when the tide is out. Betcha the boats are still there. Aloha!
