Not a Christmas goes by here on the East Coast when I don't think of Christmas in Hawaii. After dinner - the beach! in slippers and shorts. Poinsettias from the mainland survived only a few days.
The Christmas trees that were shipped in were losing their needles as you loaded them in the car. . . and it always seemed strange to open presents on a bright, sunny day.
But now, Christmas in the East is a "proper" weather nightmare. . . the trees are fresh. . . the wreaths last. . . but the song "Mele Kalikimaka" just goes around and around in my head, and I realize that for me, a Hawaiian Christmas will always be the real Christmas.
"Mele Kalikimaka" is an 8" x 10" giclee, printed on canvas and stretched around bars and stapled, from an original painting by the same name. I stretch it myself and sign it (personalized, if you like). You can frame it or run a decorative ribbon around the edge to hide the staples and hang as-is (no glass, please!).
And on Christmas, you can look at it and hear "Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say. . . on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day," too. Aloha.
