About this item
One of my first memories of coming to Hawaii in 1966 was the lei makers on the docks, and all over Waikiki. They sat on the pier, the sidewalk on Kalakaua Avenue, or in their little lean-tos at the airport or in Chinatown with their names overhead, their blossoms in baskets and their offerings strung out on the ground in front of them or hanging on a fence behind them.
Sweet August 1966 memory: A young sailor, in Hawaii on 5 days R&R (Rest and Recreation - remember, this was during Vietnam!), bought me a gardenia lei "just because." To this day, when I smell gardenia, I am instantly transported to Waikiki, in front of the old International Marketplace, wearing my gardenia lei. To this day, I wonder what happened to that young sailor.
