About this item
"I'll Remember You" is song written by Kui Lee and popularized by Don Ho and Elvis. There are many renditions, including the Makaha Sons of Niihau and Emma Veary, wife of J. Akuhead Pupule, a popular radio host when I went to the islands in 1966 (I came to know both of them in my political days). Summer of 66 was a very special time for me. I arrived in Hawaii and realized that the world had color, life, and joy. Almost every night I would go down to Waikiki Beach and sit on the sand outside the Garden Bar (gone now) at the old Hilton Hawaiian Village (now transformed into a slick tourist hotel).
All of us who were too young or too poor to get into the club would sit on the sandy beach and listen to Melveen Leed (former Miss Hawaii) sing, and the night she sang this song, it moved me to tears. I had to find out who wrote it, and it was Kui Lee, who performed with Don Ho at Don's mom's bar, Honey's, on the edge of Kaneohe, not far from where Mango HIll - my house and farm - was. But Kui Lee died that December of 1966, at age 36, and as we stood on the beach and watched the canoes carry his ashes out to sea, everyone sang "I'll Remember You" very softly, into the Hawaiian dusk.
I did this painting in honor of that song. This is an 8" X 8" giclee on canvas. I staple the canvas onto stretcher bars, and sign the giclee. (I will personalize it if you like). Frame it, or drape it with a ribbon or dried maile lei to cover the staples. And go to You Tube, if you can, or somewhere and find Kui Lee singing this song. It will make you cry.
