About this item
There were two Boat Days in Hawaii. The first was the arrivals of the great liners, bringing loved ones, students, lovers, family home from far away lands. That was the happy Boat Day, with the Royal Hawaiian Band playing on the dock. The pier was crowded with lei sellers on lauhala mats weaving leis as fast as they could sell them, food sellers, luggage-carriers, and anxious relatives, straining for the first glimpse of their loved one, lost in a pile of leis, on the railing.
The second Boat Day was a sad one. The Royal Hawaiian Bank played "Aloha Oe." The great liners had been bound to the land with strings of flower leis. Family, friends, and lovers once again lined the decks, waving and calling to those on the pier.
The great liner sounded the departure, and as the ship pulled away, it broke the flower ties with the islands. Tears streaming, beloved waved to beloved until they were too far away to see. The liner sailed out into open waters, and when it passed Diamond Head, the passengers threw their flower leis into the water.
If they drifted back toward land, you would return to the islands. If they drifted out to see, you were destined never to see Hawaii again.
This is one of my favorite paintings of all time because it evokes the overpowering emotion of that very special arrival, and departure, from the islands.
From that painting, I made this 8" x 10" signed giclee on canvas that I have stapled onto canvas bars. You can use a ribbon to hide the staples and hang it as is, or it is suitable for framing. I will personalize it if you tell me to whom.
