One thing about cats is that they are quite generous with gifts. Before my pair of white rescue cats (age 16 and 17) passed away a couple of years ago, they were fond of bringing me gifts.
Sometimes they left them in a shoe, sometimes next to my shoes, but they always seem to hang out and watch me sleep, anticipating the "fun of the shriek" that happened when I swung my feet out of bed and placed them (usually) directly on the slaughtered offering.
They weren't outside cats, so when they left a gift like this, I knew critters had broken the unspoken rule: Wild critters live outside, tame critters live inside (including me).
Love,
Diana
