A Slice of History
This painting, titled “Alice Malt Shop,” captures a cherished piece of family history. It features my husband’s Chinese great-aunt Alice, who ran a beloved malt shop in Kaneohe for an impressive 50 years.
The prices you see in the painting are authentic, reflecting a bygone era. The two young people depicted are my husband and his sister, who fondly remember visiting the shop and enjoying free malts from their great-aunt Alice.
Off to find a substitute milkshake,
Diana
~Excerpt from my book Sweet Paradise
"Auntie Alice had a malt shop in Kaneohe, from way before the war till the late sixties. Us cousins would go down to eat saimin, or help Auntie Alice clean the shop. She is eighty-something now, and worked all her life. "I stay open six in the morning till ten at night, and only fountain service,” she says, her white hair immaculately curled under a net. "It was only fountain service.'”
